I do believe Adams' insightful quote no doubt also pertains to US senators and congressmen. It seems the extreme right wing members of our US House of Representatives has actually shut down the government just to show everyone they could. Of course what will not be shut down are their yearly paychecks (from $174,000 to $223,500 with annual cost of living increases), their expense accounts for their Armani suits and matching shoes and other perks, their absurdly long paid vacations, life-long health benefits and pensions, limos and chauffeurs, office staff, world-class dining rooms in the capitol building...and this is just the small stuff. Keep in mind that during this five year long economic depression the wealth of congress has climbed obscenely while the people whose government they are shutting down crashed and is still crashing in spite of the "recovery." Keep in mind that this is true of all members of Congress no matter what party. Here's a fun fact worth meditating on from the Center for Responsive Politics: the median personal wealth for members of Congress grew to $911,510 in 2009, up from $785,515 in 2008. Nearly half of the members of Congress are millionaires. A large percentage of those who are not officially millionaires are worth into the upper hundreds of thousands, and with all of the perks they receive from our taxes they may as well be millionaires. So, economic depressions and government shutdowns do not, and never will negatively affect them, just like the wars they make. And in fact, these actions actually MAKE them money. House of representatives?....who are they representing? It certainly isn't the 80% of the US population scrounging around in and attempting to live off of the 7% of the economy we collectively own. So they must be representing the 20% of the population who bask in the luxury of the other 93% that they own, and we pay for out of our 7%. Ahah!
